European elm,palisander for draw pulls
The writing desk was made to measure for French people, who've since become friends,at the end of a long term stay in Berlin. The desk is 1,70 meter long,70 centimeters wide and 74.5 centimeters high. The final look or design includes details from some of my earlier pieces of furniture.Together with my clients,we took time and browsed through photo catalogues showing previous commisions, and agreed upon two or three features which were successfully included in the finally finished desk. The beautifully figured, coloured and grained elmwood was a once in a lifetime opportunity, which I haven't regretted buying. Two other pieces of furniture have been made from the same batch of wood, which all came from parkland surrounding a once summer residence of landed gentry from southern Germany. All curves to do with the legs, front apron and back strut were cut on the bandsaw or jigsaw, spokeshaved and scraped finished.Shaped legs bandsawed from solid wood, then using a pattern, moulded to size.Through tenons and mortices were laid out, cut, chopped and fitted. The ebonised inserts which make up part of the leg construction, are also elm, stained black and lime finished.Draw fronts were finished in the same manner. The legs were left protruding 5 millemeters above the desk surface.Apart from the stained details, the desk was oiled and waxed finished.
